Toyota Tacoma · Kill switch & immobilizer guide

Keep your Tacoma
where you parked it.

Pickups are stolen at nearly twice the rate of the average vehicle in the US, and the Tacoma holds its value better than almost anything on the road, which is exactly why it goes missing. StarterStopper is a hidden immobilizer, a kill switch done properly, that cuts the starter and a second circuit until you press a hidden button or enter your code. No app, no subscription, reversible install.

Pickups have the highest whole-vehicle theft frequency of any vehicle type, nearly double the all-vehicle average (HLDI, 2025).
High resale,
high theft.
Why this car

High resale,
high theft.

A Tacoma is worth stealing because it is worth keeping: resale values are among the highest of any pickup, parts are in demand, and the trucks run forever. The factory immobilizer is tied to your key, so a cloned key, a reprogramming tool plugged into the OBD port, or a relay on a smart-key truck gets past it.

A second immobilizer that is not on the truck's own key system cannot be programmed away. Without the hidden button or your code, the starter stays dead.

Which kit

Which StarterStopper
fits your Tacoma.

It comes down to how the truck starts. The checker below confirms it for your exact year.

Second gen and earlier, to 2015

Every Tacoma up to 2015 turns a key. Classic is the value pick: one hidden button, no code. Alarm adds a horn response to an unauthorized start.

See Classic

Third gen, 2016 to 2023

TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited and TRD Pro automatics use push-button start and need the One. SR and SR5 turn a key (Classic or Alarm); SR5 gained push-button in 2023.

See the One

Fourth gen, 2024 on

Push-button start across the range. The One is the match: press-sequence codes, per-driver codes, service mode, master code card.

Install

An afternoon
behind the dash.

The unit is smaller than a deck of cards and lives hidden behind the dash. The harness is pre-made and every cable is tagged for its connection; you splice into the starter circuit and one more circuit of your choice, mount the hidden button where only you would look, and test. Most owners are done in about two hours with the diagram for their transmission and Stop/Start setup.

Not a DIY person? An auto electrician or car-audio shop can fit it from the diagram in a couple of hours.

Questions

Tacoma owners
ask us this.

Anything else, email contact@starterstopper.com. We reply within a day.

Do you ship to the United States?

Yes. Every kit ships free from Australia, and US orders are routine. The wiring is 12 V and the diagrams are the same as everywhere else.

Is this a kill switch?

In the way most people mean it, yes: a hidden switch that keeps the engine from starting. The difference is that StarterStopper is a proper immobiliser module, not a toggle on the ignition wire. It cuts the starter and a second circuit, re-arms itself every time you switch off, and on the One the hidden button takes a code instead of a single press.

Which kit for a TRD Off-Road with push-button start?

The One. Classic and Alarm are for key-start trucks: every Tacoma to 2015, and SR and SR5 through 2022.

Will this upset the electronics or throw a fault code?

StarterStopper interrupts the starter circuit and one further circuit you choose (fuel or ECM). There is no CAN-bus integration and no model-specific electronics, so there is nothing for the body computer to object to. Some vehicles watch monitored circuits closely, which is exactly why push-button cars get the One. If you are unsure, run the 10-minute driveway test we email after the compatibility check before you install.

What about Stop/Start?

StarterStopper is designed to work with Stop/Start systems, but vehicle behaviour can vary. The install guide has a separate diagram for Stop/Start cars. If yours has it, mention it when you contact us and we will confirm the wiring for your model.

Can a thief just find it and bypass it?

They have to find it (smaller than a deck of cards, hidden behind the dash), recognise it, and short two specific terminals. By then they have spent more time than they would picking another car. The hidden button or code is the only thing that disarms it.

Does it drain the battery?

Classic and Alarm draw about 0.6 mA when armed, roughly the same as your factory clock. The One sits around 20 µA in standby. Vehicles parked for six weeks or more during testing did not flatten their battery.

Can I take it out again, or move it to my next car?

Yes. Pull the harness, reconnect the original wires with the butt connectors we ship for exactly this, done. No permanent modification, nothing cut that cannot be restored. Many owners move the unit to their next vehicle.

Is it covered by warranty?

Every StarterStopper carries a 2-year product warranty, with 30-day returns and free worldwide shipping. The install is reversible, so there is no permanent change to the vehicle; if you prefer not to do it yourself, an authorised installer fits it in a morning.
